The Design of Trellis Codes for Fading Channels
نویسنده
چکیده
It has been well established in the literature that the appropriate criterion for optimum trellis coded modulation design on the additive white Gaussian noise channel is maximization of the free Euclidean distance. We show here that when trellis coded modulation is used on a Rician fading channel with interleaving/deinterleaving, the design of the code for optimum performance is guided by other factors, in particular the lenffth of the shortest ereor event path, and the product of branch distances (Possibly normalized by the Euclidean distance of the path) along that Path. Although maximum free distance (dfree) is still an important consideration, it plays a less significant role the more severe the fading is on the channel. These considerations lead to the definition of a new distance measure for optimization of trellis codes transmitted over Rician fading channels. If no interleavingldeinterleaving is used, then once again the design of the trellis code is guided by maximizing dfree. It is also shown that allowing for multiple symbols per trellis branch, i.e., multiple trellis coded modulation (WTCM), provides an additional degree of freedom for designing a code to meet the above optimization criteria on the fading channel. potential. It is here where the MTCM technique exploits its f u l l

Performance Analysis of Space Time Trellis Codes Over Nakagami Fading & Rayleigh Fading Channels: With Comparative Analysis
Space-time trellis codes provide both diversity gain and coding gain. There are two different design criteria proposed for spacetime trellis codes (STTCs), namely the rank and determinant criteria (RDC) and the Euclidean distance design criteria (EDC). In this paper, we present the performance of STTCs over Nakagami fading channels. Our results show that the STTCs designed for Rayleigh fading c...

Trellis coded modulation (TCM) is a bandwidth efficient transmission scheme that can achieve high coding gain by integrating coding and modulation. This paper presents an analytical expression for the error event probability of concatenated space–time block coding with TCM which reveals some dominant factors affecting the system performance over slow fading channels when perfect interleavers ar...

| Space-time (ST) codes have shown considerable promise for reliable transmission, at relatively high data rates, over wireless fading channels in systems employing multiple transmit and receive antennas. Here, we consider the design of space-time codes employing multiple trellis coded modulation (MTCM). In MTCM, each trellis branch corresponds to multiple symbol transmissions from each transmi...
متن کاملAdaptive Coded Modulation for Fading Channels
We apply coset codes to adaptive modulation in fading channels. Adaptive modulation is a powerful technique to improve the energy efficiency and increase the data rate over a fading channel. Coset codes are a natural choice to use with adaptive modulation since the channel coding and modulation designs are separable. Therefore, trellis and lattice codes designed for additive white Gaussian nois...
متن کاملDesign of 16-QAM Space-Time Codes for Rapid Rayleigh Fading Channels
This paper proposes Space-Time (ST) codes for rapid fading channels using the 16-QAM signal constellation. The design of the proposed codes uses two different methods. The first method uses a high time diversity trellis encoder, and the second uses the I-Q encoding technique. Both encoding methods are expected to produce ST codes that perform better than the codes presented in the literature. O...
متن کاملSpace-Time Trellis Coded 8PSK Schemes for Rapid Rayleigh Fading Channels
This paper presents the design of 8PSK space-time (ST) trellis codes suitable for rapid fading channels. The proposed codes utilize the design criteria of ST codes over rapid fading channels. Two different approaches have been used. The first approach maximizes the symbol-wise Hamming distance (HD) between signals leaving from or entering to the same encoder’s state. In the second approach, set...
